Description
Real, intimate situations and stories of actually existing characters inspire me. My wife is sitting in the studio and reading at night. I see this painting as if a traditional scene had unfolded into a contemporary painting with huge variety of intense grays of modern oil colors.

Hungarian born artist Tibor Simon-Mazula works instinctively, taking refuge in the physical and tangible aspects of painting. The artist creates intimate, dream-like scenes and portrays figures and spaces, inspired by the people surrounding him, such as his wife, friends or travel companions. His images represent everyday objects, situations and people within their actual / familiar environment - bathing, reading, stretching on the couch or standing on the shore.

Tibor’s primary medium is oil painting. However, his artistic practice stretches into drawing and short films as well. His works are particularly influenced by his background in mathematics and filmmaking. He uses basic composition, color and scale in order to create a type of visual style, that helps the observer relate to the subjects of his artworks. The artist uses substantial materials, to create a rough texture to his paintings. These heavily textured figures and limited color palette of a variety of grays, aim to create a harmonious mood to his paintings, as well as, express / showcase the universal experiences people seem to share. The fact that, despite different personal perspectives, people essentially face the same challenges, but in different circumstances.

The artist left Europe in 2008, and moved to Dubai, where he worked as an art director, a 2D/3D artist creating interactive digital experiences for commercial brands, art spaces and live events. His artworks also involve memory fragments from Tibor's life in Europe, the Arabian Peninsula and California. His experiences at these different places lead him to explore personal identity, seclusion and human connections. With his observational method, he aims to portray candid images of repeating human stories, from an unusual perspective.

After finishing his studies in California, the artist’s works have been shown at several exhibitions in the United States, next to other well known contemporary artists. He has won the Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series Competition in 2015 and was also named an Emerging Artist at the Academy of Art University in 2013. On top of that, Tibor’s artworks have been published in many prominent magazines and books, such as the American Art Collector, Wide Walls or the Art Reveal Magazine. The artists currently lives and works in Budapest, with his wife, Diana, who has always been one or his primary sources of inspiration for his works.
