Janos Aknay (born in 1949, Nyíregyháza, Hungary) is a Hungarian painter and graphic artist. In 1970 he moved to Szentendre, a place which played a significant role in his artistic career. Progressive artistic traditions of Szentendre influenced Aknay’s distinctive style, constructive and symbolic, his artworks frequently contain elements of the town’s architecture, incorporating old Hungarian runes. In 1972 he became one of the founders of the Vajda Lajos Studio, a circle of visual artists interested in experimental practices, and has been its active member since then. He was admitted to the Studio of Young Artists in 1976, to the Arts Fund in 1977 and to the Association of Hungarian Artists in 1983. János Aknay is the president of the Hungarian Association of Creative Artists (MAOE) and member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts.
